FDA says Omega-3 supplements can put heart benefits on label

On September 8, 2004, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that supplements containing Omega-3 fatty acids can make the claim on their label that they help reduce the risk of heart disease. This new, approved claim reads as follows: “Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary disease.”

The FDA also recommended that persons adding omega-3 fatty acids to their daily diet should not exceed more than three grams per day of EPA and DHA with no more than two grams of that coming from a dietary supplement per day. Note: 1000 milligrams (mg) EQUALS 1 gram (g) or 1000mg EQUALS 1g
